Expert Dental Care

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the final teeth to emerge. Their place is at the back of the mouth behind your other two molars. Wisdom teeth come in generally between the ages of 17 to 25. Some people never develop wisdom teeth; others emerge healthily, causing no complications. Often, however, wisdom teeth need to be removed due to the impact they have on your gums, tooth alignment, or jawbone.

It’s our priority at Summit View Dental Centre to practice preventative dental care. Wisdom teeth may affect your oral health adversely, causing dental complications later in life such as tooth decay, infection, bone loss, gum disease and cyst formation. If our x-rays reveal abnormalities in the progression of growth of your wisdom teeth, we may recommend an extraction for your overall oral health.

More About Removal

In consultation with Dr. Dhesi, you will determine what kind of sedation, if any, is right for you. We will discuss extraction factors with our patients prior to the surgery, such as the angle, root size and depth, and location of teeth within the gums. While the exact procedure depends on the above factors, this is what you might expect for your surgery:

  1. Sedation will be administered in the method of your choice (Nitrous oxide or oral sedation).
  2. Local anesthetic is administered.
  3. An incision may be made to reach the tooth.
  4. The tooth is completely removed, along with the roots.
  5. The socket is cleaned and the gum is stitched closed, or sutured.

Dr. Dhesi and the team at Summit View Dental will make sure you have everything you need for post-extraction care prior to the surgery. We want to make sure our patients are fully equipped for a speedy and painless-as-possible recovery. If you or your teenager feels wisdom teeth coming in, it might be a good time to come in to Summit View Dental for a consultation today.
