Preventative Dental Care

It’s our priority at Summit View Dental to practice preventative dental care. With the images captured by digital x-rays, we can identify dental abnormalities and early formation of cavities allowing us to create a more effective and personalized dental care plan for our patients.

Digital x-rays provide images of your teeth that allow dentists to see extensive detail that might be impossible to see with the naked eye. Beyond simply general monitoring of tooth health, x-rays can allow dentists to identify:

  • Potential cavities or decay

  • Periodontal Disease (gum disease)

  • Problematic tooth and root alignment

  • Abscesses

  • Issues within the tooth (root canal)

  • Oral cancers with in the bone

Are digital x-rays safe?

Your safety and well-being is our priority at Summit View Dental Centre. We use the latest technology to gather information about your oral health. Digital x-rays use an extremely low amount of radiation to capture a mouth series — up to 90 percent lower than older technology.

We are exposed to small amounts of radiation everyday, from natural and human-made sources. The average radiation exposure from an x-ray procedure is 0.005 millisievert (mSv). Compare this to a chest x-ray (0.10 mSv) or a mammography (0.42 mSv)**, and you’ll see it’s quite low. Taking a flight from the east coast to the west coast of the US would be 0.0335 mSv.

Despite the safe level of radiation, we make sure to take precautions for our patients. We make sure to only take x-rays when necessary, providing protective lead aprons for our patients, and using the least amount of exposure time to obtain an image.  If you have any questions or concerns, we will be happy to address them.

The frequency of digital x-rays depends on your personal dental needs. In most cases, a dental x-ray is required every 12 months.  We will take into consideration your medical history, your risk for oral disease and possible symptoms before recommending dental x-rays.
